25 August 2010

PKK should be considered as an important political actor, says former intelligence officer

A prominent ex-intelligence officer says Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) should be seriously considered as an important political actor in Turkey.

In an interview published in Turkish daily Vatan, Cevat Ones, ex deputy director of Turkish intelligence agency said PKK is a result of Kurdish Question.

"In account of public support and armed force PKK should be considered as an important political actor" he said.

Ones claimed that it's not possible for the Turkish government to establish a direct dialogue with the PKK after 26 years of conflict. He said that it's intelligence agency's duty to negotiate with the PKK and help to stop the fighting.

Ones also said lowering the election threshold and easing restrictions on use of Kurdish language will help to pave the way for peaceful dialogue.
