Chemical Ali hanged for killing Kurds

Baghdad – Iraqi government spokesperson Ali al-Dabbagh confirmed Ali Hassan al-Majid was hanged on Monday morning. He was sentenced to death for the fourth time on 17 January.

Ali Hassan al-Majid was first sentenced to death by hanging 2007 for his role in a military genocidal campaign, known as Anfal, against Iraqi Kurds. He was sentenced to death again in 2008 for his involvement in crushing a Shiite uprising in southern Iraq after the 1991 gulf war, and a third time last year for his role in killing and displacing Shiite Muslims in 1999. The last time he was sentenced to death for ordering a poison gas attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988, which killed at least 5,000 Kurds.
